Liber Glossarum, saec. VII-VIII

The Liber Glossarum is a vast encyclopaedic glossary compiled from heterogeneous materials of various kinds (patristic, exegetical, encyclopaedic, scientific, grammatical, lexicographical …) and homogeneous by nature, originating in VII^th century wisigothic Spain. It was widely circulated by the end of the VIII^th century, probably in Charlemagne’s court, and is present in Carolingian libraries such as Corbie, Reichenau, Saint-Riquier, Fleury, Lorsch, Tours and Auxerre among others. While it was a major resource for Carolingian scholars, the project of a complete edition by W.M. Lindsay resulted only in a list of lemmata and sources, so that it was not possible to read the real text of the Liber Glossarum nor to explore on a larger scale the question of its sources. This new edition is as important as the new edition of Isidore’s Etymologies. It also provides information on the way such a work was assembled and copied, and the extensive use over time of materials found in Isidore’s Sevillian scriptorium : the preparatory files underpinning Isidore’s treatises were indeed combined with thousands of Isidore's extracts to give birth to the Liber Glossarum. 

Le Liber Glossarum est un vaste glossaire encyclop?dique compil? ? partir de mat?riaux h?t?rog?nes par leur nature (patristique, ex?g?tique, encyclop?dique, scientifique, grammaticale, lexicographique…) et homog?nes par leur origine, qui est l’Espagne wisigothique du VII^e si?cle. Il a ?t? diffus? ? la fin du VIII^e si?cle, probablement dans l’entourage de Charlemagne, et est repr?sent? dans les biblioth?ques carolingiennes de Corbie, Reichenau, Saint-Riquier, Fleury, Lorsch, Tours et Auxerre entre autres. Alors qu’il s’agissait d’une ressource capitale pour les lettr?s carolingiens, le projet d’une ?dition compl?te par W.M. Lindsay a seulement abouti ? une liste des lemmes et des sources utilis?es, en sorte qu’il n’?tait pas possible d’acc?der au texte r?el du Liber Glossarum ni de travailler sur une grande ?chelle la question de ses sources. Cette nouvelle ?dition est aussi importante que la nouvelle ?dition des Etymologies d’Isidore de S?ville. Elle apporte aussi des informations sur la fa?on dont un tel ouvrage a ?t? assemble et copi?, et sur l’usage prolong? des mat?riaux du scriptorium s?villan d’Isidore : ce sont en effet les dossiers pr?paratoires de l’œuvre isidorien qui ont ?t? a posteriori combin?s ? des milliers d’extraits d’Isidore lui-m?me pour donner naissance au Liber glossarum.
